BRIDPORT DRIVER SLAMS JOBSWORTHS OVER PARKING FINE

A taxi driver whose car broke down in the floods is incensed after getting a parking ticket - at 5am the day after. Terry Houston, who works for Pat’s Taxis in Bridport, said his car broke down at mid- night. He got help pushing it to a safe place in Fulbrooks Lane and left a note on it saying the car had broken down. He told the Dorset Echo:

“Everywhere

was flooded and [yet] the warden managed to get into town and put a ticket on my car. “We are paying his wages at 5.15 on a Sunday morning in the worst weather we have

had in 35 years. I just thought people ought to know that council ticket collec- tors are out at five in the morning. “The car broke down at midnight but if it had broken down at two o’clock in the afternoon you still couldn’t have got anything done because Bridport was blocked. I put a big notice in the window saying ‘broken down, awaiting recovery’.” A spokesman for Dorset County Council said: “We have no knowledge of the ticket and have had no appeal. We would just advise the gentlemen in question calls the num-

ber on the back and gives the details and go through the appeals process because it does sound like an unusual circumstance.” Mmmm... Almost like the time NPHA Gen Secretary

Bryan

Roland got a phone call at 3am one Christ- mas Eve morning from the trade in Exeter; a local burger bar had stayed open for them to grab a bite when their shift ended, and the local constable was doing them for obstruction. Bryan asked the PC who was being obstructed in an empty car park. The PC went away. - Ed.

MAN LAY IN FRONT OF BRIGHTON TAXI AND PRETENDED IT HAD HIT HIM

A man who lay in front of a taxi and claimed it had hit him has been fined for wasting police time. The 50-year-old was seen by several mem- bers of

the public

damaging a tree and then laying down in front of a taxi claiming the taxi had hit him. During both incidents in

New Road,

Brighton, he was ver- bally abusive to the taxi driver and mem- bers of the public who were looking on.

He also made two phone calls to the emergency services and had two police officers and three ambulance crew deal- ing with him for more than 45 minutes. The ambulance crew then had to take him to hos- pital in the end as he became unresponsive. However, he was dis- charged a short time later following medical examinations. The incident

took

place on Sunday, July 15, at 11pm. The man,

from Brighton, was fined £80 for wasting police time. PC Jimmy Conway told the Brighton Argus: “This was an appalling waste of two emergency services’ time. “This individual took up valuable police and ambulance time at a particularly busy part of the evening, potentially

putting

Brighton and Hove residents in danger due to his thoughtless acts.”

MUM ROBBED DUBLIN DRIVER WHO REFUSED TO HAVE SEX

A mother of three who threatened a cabbie with a syringe before robbing him, after he spurned her sexual advances, has been sentenced to five years with the final two suspended. According to the Dublin Evening Herald, Mary Ward, 30, from Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Crimi- nal Court to robbery of Declan Byrne and threatening him with a syringe as well as the attempted robbery of Sean McGarby in August 2011. Detective Garda Barry Hayes told prosecuting counsel that Mr Byrne had picked up a group of people including Ward in his taxi. He dropped off everyone except Ward who

asked to go on to St James’ Hospital. After Mr Byrne ignored her offers to perform sexual acts for money, Ward took out a blood- filled syringe, told him she had Aids and demanded money from him. He told her he kept his money in the boot and as they both went to the back of the car he grabbed her by the wrist. She got free and fled before getting into another taxi nearby. Again she took out the syringe and demand- ed money. The driver handed over €40 and took his phone to make a call. She then made him take her to an ATM in a shop and told him to withdraw €500. However he ran

away and she fled. Gar- dai arrived and traced the last called number on the driver’s phone to a house in Rialto. They arrived at the house and found Ward there with the syringe. She made full admis- sions in interview. She has 34 previous convictions including prostitution, drug pos- session and theft. She has three children who live with her mother. Mmmm… However humorous this starts out sounding, the seri- ousness of the crime is reflected in the sen- tence. It is obvious this woman had done this sort of

thing

before; who carries a blood-filled syringe around? Pity her chil- dren… Ed.
