SALFORD COUNCIL SECURES CONVICTION AGAINST PH DRIVER WHO OVERCHARGED FOR JOURNEY
A Salford City Council licensed PH driver, Arif Mohammad, has pleaded guilty
at Salford
Magistrates’ Court following a complaint that Mr Mohammad had overcharged a passenger
following a concert at Bolton Stadium in July 2023. The complainant had approached Mr Mohammad’s PHV and asked if he could take her and three other people to a hotel. Mohammad
agreed without a booking in place with a private hire operator. He admitted offering the journey without a booking and was ordered to pay a £400 fine, £1,200 costs and £160 victim surcharge.
READING PH DRIVER GETS FOUR-MONTH BAN AFTER ILLEGAL HENLEY REGATTA PICK UP
A Reading private hire driver has been banned from driving for four months and ordered to pay over £2,700 in fines and costs after illegally operating during the Henley Regatta. Wasif Butt, 41, was found guilty of
unlawfully plying for hire and driving without valid insurance at Oxford Magistrates Court on 10 March. South Oxfordshire DC licensing officers, working undercover with Reading BC, caught Butt illegally parked on New Street during the
2024 Regatta. Butt, licensed by Fareham BC, agreed to take the officers to Reading for £50, a significantly inflated fare. Butt’s case has been referred to Fareham Borough Council for further licensing review.
BURY PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER TO PAY £990 AFTER OLD TRAFFORD STING
A Bury PH driver has been caught illegally plying for hire outside Emirates Old Trafford. Bilal Khan, licensed by
Council, admitted to
Manchester City offences
following a sting operation involving undercover Trafford Council licensing officers.
They had approached Khan’s vehicle and despite no pre- booking, Khan agreed to take them for £20 cash to Manchester city centre. Khan, who was also not displaying a driver’s badge, initially claimed he intended to offer the lift for
free “out of the goodness of his heart.” However, at Manchester Magis- trates’ Court, Khan pleaded guilty to the charges and was ordered to pay a £600 fine, a £240 surcharge and £150 towards prosecution costs.
GLASGOW PH DRIVER SUSPENDED AFTER £90 SIX-MILE FARE & £20 PURSE RETURN CHARGE
A Glasgow PH driver has been suspended for three months after illegally picking up passengers and charging them an “excessive” £90 for a six-mile journey, the licensing and regulatory committee heard. In November 2024, Malik Faisal, operating illegally, picked up the passengers. During the trip, a
58
passenger was sick, prompting Faisal to “slam on the brakes suddenly,”
resulting in another
passenger hitting their head. The fare, initially quoted at £30, was repeatedly increased, reaching a final charge of £90. Cllr Alex Wilson said: “You were taking excessive money for a journey that
was nowhere near that amount.” Faisal later found a purse in his vehicle and returned it to the passenger’s mother, for which he demanded and received a £20 fee. Cllr Wilson added: “You should never have accepted a penny.” The committee approved a three- month suspension.
