Many may have lost someone close to them, either through COVID-19 or other health problems impacted by the pressure on the NHS.


The many thousands of workers who have come to the UK to work will be facing further weeks and months of being unable to see family and friends overseas or if they can travel, onerous quarantine requirements in countries my mean they do not have enough leave to make the trip.


We are not out of the woods yet.


My own employer, Make UK, has been very effective in making sure staff are supported through video calls and activities such as promoting our well-being initiatives as well as encouraging staff to be conscious of their own mental well-being.


We also are advising companies on how to ensure their staff are safe both physically and mentally when they do return to work. For many, who may have been furloughed for weeks or possibly months by the time all industries are back at work, it is important to re-induct people back into work in terms of safe social-distancing measures, PPE and new ways of working. Their mental health and emotional well- being can also be aided by providing


appropriate information and support, for example, those who have been bereaved by the virus may find colleagues discussing it rather upsetting. They may be worried about their own health so perhaps they will need the support of a mentor or just someone to chat to if they are concerned. Some may have developed conditions such as anxiety or depression as a result of weeks of lockdown, concern about jobs, finances, etc.


Check in with all staff on how they are feeling.


Sometimes just getting people talking about their worries is enough but you may also wish to consider additional steps such as signposting people to organisations that can help them such as CABs, credit unions or counselling services.


None of us have lived through a time like this. It is a time in which many organisations will discover just how important employee well-being is to stabilising workforces as we get back on our feet.
