WISH INFO 13: COVID-19 and waste management activities
IN the last article we focused on hygiene, social distancing and PPE. Whilst some of the restric- tions implemented as part of the lockdown have now been eased, it is clear that some things will re- main in place for the foreseeable future.
The need to be vigilant about hygiene and social distancing has become the new norm but as the weeks tick by it is easy to get com- placent, especially if you (or no-one close to you) have not been directly affected by the coronavirus. Howev-
er, it is important that we all remem- ber the necessity of handwashing and the need to “stay alert”.
So it is without any apology that in this month’s article we are revisit- ing the guidance about managing COVID-19 risks in the context of a range of waste management activi- ties published by the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum (WISH).
The document: “WISH INFO 13 COVID-19 and waste management activities” is available from the WISH website (click here to read

it) and is regularly updated as new information becomes available; we are currently at issue 5, which was published on 15 May 2020).
Getting the message across
One of the first things that the updated guidance document high- lights is the wealth of useful material that is free to download including graphics on how to wash your hands, symptoms and similar. This type of resource can be used as posters, hand-outs for employees and site users to reinforce issues such as good hygiene. Simple infographics can act as a valuable reminder to follow guidance.
