From Busan to London: Celebrate 100 years of IFLA in 2027

CILIP and the UK have picked up the baton for IFLA’s World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) as it heads to London in 2027.

THIS year’s congress took place in Busan, South Korea, and saw thousands of library and informa- tion delegates come together for four days with a packed programme of talks and sessions. With IFLA celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2027, it is a perfect time for the WLIC to head to London – not only is CILIP celebrating its own anniversary, marking 150 years since it was founded as the Library Association, CILIP is also a founding member of IFLA and still retains its original mem- bership number of 001. The first ever IFLA gathering took place in the UK in 1927

with 14 European library associations and the USA signing the resolution to create the International Library and Bibliograph- ical Committee, which later became IFLA. CILIP Chair of Trustees Kate Robinson attended WLIC in Busan and gave an address to delegates, saying: “It is a tremendous honour for the UK to host this gathering in IFLA’s Centenary Year. IFLA was founded in the UK back in 1927 and CILIP remains proud to be member 001. There is something truly special about bringing the global library and information community back to where that journey began, to reflect on a century of achievement and to look ahead to the next hundred years of our profession. “London provides a wonderful setting for this milestone congress. As one of the world’s most connected cities, it offers a vibrant cultural scene alongside some of the world’s great library, archive and information collections. From the British Library and Wellcome Collection to world-class museums, theatres and heritage sites, there is no shortage of inspiration for visitors.”

With the main congress taking place at London’s Excel centre from 12 August 2027, there will be an opportunity for UK and

European based library and information professionals to take part in one of the library world’s biggest events close to home. There will also be a number of satellite events across the UK, helping to make Congress accessible for those who can’t make it to London. And CILIP members will also receive a significant discount

on entry to next year’s Congress, making it even more afford- able for them. Kate added: “Across England, Scotland, Wales and North- ern Ireland, colleagues are doing remarkable work in libraries, archives and information services, and we are excited to share that with you.

“Most importantly, this congress will be about people. Across

the UK, library and information professionals are already look- ing forward to welcoming the global IFLA community, sharing ideas, building connections and celebrating the impact of our profession together.”

New podcast series from CILIP in Scotland

CILIP Scotland have launched their newest podcast series, Open Shelf, hosted by Professor David McMenemy and funded by the University of Glasgow Impact Acceleration Fund.

The series will bring together voices of the library sector, exploring topics relevant to the profession including artificial intelligence, censorship, homelessness, and more. The leading episode features Kirsten MacQuarrie, Sector Devel- opment Manager at CILIPS and Editor of Feminist Librarianship: Principles, Practices and Provocations (Facet Publishing). In this episode, Kirsten and David discuss the themes of the book, which sees contributions from over 20 women across the Library and Information sector and beyond. From attachment theory and eco feminism to imposter syndrome, their conversation delves into the systemic biases at play. Further reflections from colleagues and contributors Leah Higgins and Sean McNamara highlight the need for allyship and widening the conversation. Episode one of Open Shelf is out now via Apple, Spotify, and Youtube.
