HAT are leader- ship skills? A timely question in the light of the re-branding
of the CILIP annual conference. There are many and varied definitions, but the general consensus is that leadership skills include the attribute to aid in guiding and encouraging a group of people and their team toward achieving a set of goals. Skill sets include communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and decision-making.
All information professionals should work towards demonstrating these attributes, whether or not in full-time work. For those outside full-time work and those in voluntary roles, these skills are a huge asset and can contribute significantly to CILIP’s own strategic aims. Furthermore, information professionals in leadership roles who have now retired are in a position to share their experience and knowledge with aspiring leaders, and often very keen to do so. CILIP RPG, the Special Interest Group for those outside full time work plan to offer a bursary this year for attendance at the CILIP Leadership Conference – see CILIP website for more information: www.

career included Research, Higher Education and Health Libraries. She moved out of full-time work in 2009. Linda was attracted to CILIP RPG by the opportunity to join a forum for continuing involvement with library, information and knowledge professionals as they meet the many challenges facing their services. Linda was asked by a friend to join the first CILIP RPG residential weekend. She says “I found it such an enjoyable and interesting experience I rejoined CILIP so that I could be a member of RPG. I appreciate the friendship and the opportunity to join visits, events and webinars that are enjoyable and informative.” Linda comments: “CILIP RPG can bring a mature and supportive perspective to the challenges facing libraries. It is made up of library, information and knowledge professionals representing not only wide experience but also time spent reflecting on that experience, often leading to some interesting conclusions. I find it to be a forward- looking group and it brings together people who share an aspiration to keep libraries and the skills and understanding of library, information and knowledge professionals alive. I hope CILIP RPG will take an imaginative view of what might be
