T

his will be my last-ever introduction to Information Pro- fessional magazine before I leave CILIP to take up a new role as the Chief Executive of Ukie, the UK trade associa- tion for video games, at the end of March. It has been the greatest privilege of my career to serve

as your Chief Executive over the past eight and a half years, so I wanted to use this opportunity to say a few thanks and offer a brief reflection on the future of our profession. I’d like to start by thanking the people who make CILIP the vibrant, energetic and collaborative community that it is. Whether the staff team and Board of Trustees, our Presidential team, our sector partners or the countless volunteers that lead our Member Networks and Professional Registration. And of course, most of all, I would like to thank you – the CILIP members that go out and make the difference to your users every single day. CILIP was once referred to by my former colleague at CILIP Cymru Wales, Dr Amy Staniforth as “a place where librarians, information and knowledge management professionals come together and decide what to do.” This always seemed spot-on to me. Our profession has seen tremendous changes and has risen to meet each challenge with creativity, ambition and optimism. Now, as we stand at the precipice of a new AI-driven era, it is our professional skills, values and ethics that will help users feel the benefit while minimising the risks. As I look back, there are so many highlights of my time at CILIP. From celebrating the brilliant new generation of information pro- fessionals on the CILIP125 list to visiting some of the world’s most awe-inspiring libraries.

Everywhere I have gone in this role, I have been struck by the pro- fessionalism and resilience of our community. Perhaps most of all, it was one public librarian – herself facing redundancy – in a small local library in Leicestershire that captured this spirit when she told me “I don’t care what happens to me. We’ve just got to keep the kids reading.” That sense of mission carried me through some tough discussions with political stakeholders over the years! So I wanted to offer you one final thought before heading off to pastures new. I was once asked at an event at the British Library how I could encourage young people to come into this profession despite the contemporary challenges of funding and recognition. My response now is the same as it was then – that there is no other profession on earth that makes the difference that librarians, informa- tion professionals and knowledge managers do, at every point in a person’s life. What you do makes a profound difference, every day, for millions of people. And what could be more worthwhile than that?
