Honorary Fellows recognised at annual general meeting

THREE Honorary Fellowships were awarded at this year’s CILIP AGM. The honour is CILIP’s highest award and is made in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the library and informa- tion world, and has been awarded by CILIP and its predecessor, The Library Association, since 1896. This year’s three winners have different connections to the sector, but each has delivered lasting, positive change in one way or another. Poet, author, reading advocate and the current Waterstones Children’s Laureate Joseph Coehlo has been made an Hon- orary Fellow for “his services to libraries and reading”.

Professor Briony Birdi of the iSchool at

the University of Sheffield has been recog- nised for her contribution to Library and Information Science, as well as her role

in promoting and protecting ethical values. She is described as “a leading academic and researcher in the field of library and infor- mation science and a thought-leader in the fields of reader development and Diversity, Equality and Inclusion in libraries”. The final Honorary Fellowship was made

to Alison Wheeler, who has been an impor- tant member of CILIP’s Board of Trustees, where she served as Honorary Treasurer and helping to lead CILIP through a chal- lenging period of change. During her library career she played a significant role in set- ting up the regional agency for libraries in the East of England and also brokered the first national partnership agreement between public libraries and the NHS. Alison spoke passionately about her career and the value she has seen from CILIP membership and her engagement with it,

Mentor of the Year

CILIP’s Mentor of the Year for 2023 is Sarah Elsegood. Each year CILIP’s Mentors support other members as they work towards Professional Registration (PR) – Certification, Chartership or Fellowship. There are more than 250 mentors who volunteer their time, experience and knowledge to help PR candidates to achieve their goals. Professional Registration is a valuable benefit of CILIP Membership, enabling individuals to demonstrate their professional standards. Any CILIP member can sign up to Profes- sional Registration and access a wealth of resources and tools to help them through the process. However, the assistance and sup- port from a fellow information professional who has been through the process and helped others through it can be invaluable. Sarah, Academic Services Manager at Anglia Ruskin University was announced as this year’s Mentor of the Year at CILIP’s AGM by CILIP President John Trevor-Allen, who said: “Sarah is recognised for her motivating, accessible and mentee needs-driven approach to men- toring, going the extra mile to introduce her mentee to others in her network who were able to provide different perspectives valuable to chartership submission.” Sarah said: “Mentoring is so rewarding and I have certainly been inspired by their hard work, enthusiasm and their perseverance,” adding, “with every mentee I gain insights myself and I learn about other sectors and library roles and I would encourage anyone else thinking about it to take the train. Mentoring is such a useful skill.
