I
t doesn’t seem long since I was writing the first introduction of 2023 for Information Professional, but we are now nearly at the year end – just one more issue before 2024 comes around, and don’t forget it is one of our digital-only issues. It’s worth remembering that we created a new app and digi- tal issue for a number of reasons. Firstly, the app has accessibility features built-in, unlike some traditional forms of electronic maga- zines. It means members can use it with screen readers if they wish, or increase the size of the text making it easier to read. But following on from a hugely successful Green Libraries Week, held at the start of October, I’m particularly reminded of the sec- ond reason – to help CILIP reduce its carbon footprint. The digital version lets you opt-out of receiving a paper copy of Information Professional altogether, and for anyone feeling inspired by Green Libraries Week, our December issue could be the perfect opportu- nity to see whether a digital subscription could work for you. You could go digital-only as a new year’s resolution, and don’t worry it’s easy to opt back in to receiving the print copy if you decide to. You can opt in or out through your CILIP member portal. And while you are there, you could take the time to check all of your other details are up to date and perhaps look to see whether there is a CILIP Special Interest Group or Member Network you are interested in joining. They are all free for CILIP members, and you can join as many as you like. Looking at this issue of Informa- tion Professional, and we have some Insights from some of those networks and groups. They are a great way of connecting with the profession beyond your own networks, and can provide a way into to new areas of interest. We also have Libraries Rewired to look forward to, a brand new event on the calendar but one that has caught the imagination of a lot of people who are looking to learn more about how tech and digital solutions can work for them. Libraries Rewired is just one of a growing number of conferences that CILIP is curating to support members. Anyone who has been to one will know how engaging and valuable they can be – if you haven’t been to one yet, I’d urge you to keep an eye on CILIP’s events calendar for 2024.
If you didn’t manage to get tickets for this year’s Libraries Rewired, you can still get a taste of what’s happening in this issue, with a piece from speaker Daniel van Strien looking at how infor- mation professionals can, and should be, shaping AI tools to their services.
