intellectual freedom for services. Managing safe and inclusive public library services (www.cilip.org.uk/safe-and-inclusive-guide) provides practical advice and guidance on how to deliver services that ensure users have access to a broad range of content. The guidance draws on CILIP’s Ethical Framework, which underpins all CILIP’s policies, helping to protect the principles that have built the library, information, and knowl- edge sectors. CILIP Scotland has also funded the creation of a new toolkit that helps to put the ethics and values of the profes- sion at the heart of advocacy. Dr David McMenemy’s REFE- AL project is aimed at giving information professionals the skills and confidence to talk about why their services matter – you can read more on page 34 of this issue.

Leadership

CILIP 125 was a recognition of the profession’s rising stars and emerging leaders in the first years of their careers. A total of 125 people were named on the CILIP 125 list as part of CILIP’s 125th anniversary celebrations. Each of those on the list was chosen because of the positive impact they are having on the profession, highlighting the fact that leader- ship can come at any level, and is not reserved for those in traditional leadership.

The notion that leadership can come at any point in a career was underlined this year at CILIP Conference. The event headed to Birmingham and leadership was one of the themes informing the programme – and while the conference looked at some of the big issues facing information professionals, it was also about including a new generation in the conversa- tions about the future direction of libraries, information, and knowledge management.

Developing your skills Throughout 2023 CILIP has been taking practical steps to implement its We are CILIP strategy. New events and activi- ties are delivering even more value and support for members, and CILIP’s training offer enables members to continue their professional development at their own pace. You can find out more about what is on offer through the CILIP website. CILIP’s Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) is a comprehensive tool to help you discover gaps in our knowledge and identify which areas of training would be most useful to your professional develop ment. Information professionals share a core set of skills that can be adapted and transferred across sectors. CILIP can support members to achieve their professional goals, and the PKSB is a great place to start (www.cilip.org.uk/pksb). And you can find all upcoming events at www.cilip.org.uk/events and access training and CPD resources at www.cilip.org.uk/TrainingandCPD. Remem- ber, CILIP members get a discount on training and events, with many that are completely free for members.

Take the next step

CILIP is the only chartered body in the world dedicated to uniting, supporting, and advocating for information pro- fessionals and librarians in all sectors. Any member can undertake professional registration with CILIP, and all those who meet the required standard receive official recognition in the form of Certification, Chartership or Fellowship. Each of these professional standards are recognised by employ- ers, both in the UK and internationally. All three levels of professional registration have been certified by the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework and have been deemed to be equivalent to a Higher Certificate for Certification, a bachelor’s degree for Chartership and a master’s degree for Fellowship. CILIP has a network of mentors who can support individuals

Be part of something bigger

CILIP’s commitment to all those working in the library, information and knowledge management sectors is a unique strength. It acts as a unifying body for the profession and helps to raise the profile of all those working in associated roles. It means that CILIP can advocate across sectors, build coalitions and partnerships, and develop new relationships to benefit all those who work in, or use information services.

Your membership is not only an investment in your own skills and development, it is also an investment in the future of the profession helping to ensure that libraries, information and knowledge manage- ment services are valued and relevant in a world that is increasingly reliant on access to high-quality information.
