More work

But for a small library with a small team it is a huge piece of work to add to an already impressive work load. “That’s right, and what we need to do is break it down into chunks and work out steps. At the moment we’re thinking about what we could do and how it could be a multi-year project. It could start off with practical things like looking at our collections and widening where we get books from. Decol- onisation hasn’t recently been discussed at LILA because it’s been a bit difficult to meet. But it would be useful to chat about it – what people’s experiences are, whether there is push back from people who don’t want to do it, and how are they dealing with that.”

Conference

diversify our collections and update our subject headings.

“Chatham House was founded be- cause people were horrified by what happened in the First World War so it was founded with really good aims. But it would be interesting to see the attitudes that people had, aspects of paternalism, that kind of thing. And

I was speaking to someone at another think-tank that is looking at their found- ers – where the money came from – and it made me wonder if we are doing that at Chatham House. I’m sure people here are looking, and the library can help because we have the archives. It is the past and we can’t change that, but we can be transpar- ent and open about it.”

At CILIP Conference in July, Binni will for the second time be chairing the lightning talks session “New Voices, Big Ideas”. The theme this year is “What is Sustainabil- ity?” and applications are invited from library and information workers from underrepresented groups and who haven’t spoken at a conference or event before. “I am really pleased to be chairing this ses- sion again, especially because it’s open to those who may feel they don’t always get a chance to speak. It’s important that we create a welcoming and inviting space and I’m looking forward to finding out which topics people would like to talk about!” Book your Early Bird place at CILIP Conference and Expo before 27 May at www.cilipconference.org.uk.
