I
am writing this month’s introduction from my local library. It’s a classic Carnegie library, situated just off my local High Street with an imposing red brick portico opening out into a light and airy space filled with desks, computers, shelving and – most importantly – people. Looking around, there are young people studying for exams – full of focus and anxiety. There are parents taking a moment of respite while their toddlers raid the book bins. Somewhere, a printer is whirring away. This – this safe, trusted and inclusive space – is a profoundly im- portant part of daily life for millions of people. In every town, city and village, people of all ages and walks of life cross the threshold of their local library knowing they will be not only welcomed, but valued. Our library spaces and places are built on the ideas of social justice, inclusion, universality – the values that sit at the heart of our profession and which constitute the focus for this issue of Infor- mation Professional.
This month, I was lucky to be part of a one-day workshop at the
Library of Birmingham to re-launch Designing Libraries (www.
designinglibraries.org.uk). The session, led by Ayub Khan, Head of Uni- versal Services at Warwickshire County Council, brought together leading architects, design companies and librarians to explore the importance of the library space in a post-pandemic world. It was only after the session that we learnt of the untimely death of David Lindley, the driving force behind the website for more than a decade. I like to think he would have appreciated the round of applause he received in absentia on the day. As we look ahead to life in a post-truth, post-pandemic world, our professional community is undergoing a process of renewal. Librar- ians and information professionals are not just resuming services interrupted by Covid-19, but re-defining them for a new generation of users and learners. In this process of renewal, our library spaces – far from being replaced or supplanted by the digital – are more important than they have ever been. We offer places of trust and safety, learn- ing and community, dialogue and representation. In every school, University, prison, healthcare trust, locality or business - the library is a meaningful place that belongs to and adapts to the needs of the people who use it. Libraries are beautiful places and spaces that belong to all of us. At CILIP, we want to ensure that everyone, every child, every re- searcher, every parent, every carer, grows up with the right to enjoy the wonderful experience that I am having today – simply to be at the library with all that that means.
