Cultural hub brings library, museum and gallery space under one roof

A NEW library, gallery space and museum had its official opening in the spring, with a virtual tour offering Doncaster residents a chance to look round despite Covid restrictions.

The Danum Gallery, Library & Museum

is a £14m cultural hub that is part of Doncaster’s town centre regeneration plans. Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said the virtual tour was designed to give as many people as possible a taste of the new centre, which has been built on a former girls’ school. The library will have dedicated spaces for families, chil- dren, young people as well as a range of research and learning facilities. She said: “The cutting edge building is designed and kitted out to inspire creativ- ity and learning. Embracing technology to bring it to life digitally is a fitting way for people to get a taste of what they can expect when we can officially open the doors and let visitors inside once coro- navirus restrictions are lifted.” With restrictions set to be lifted fur-

ther this month, the centre is likely to be open fully by summer. Mayor Jones said: “It was a bold move to deliver this develop- ment in the current economic climate. Bringing these services under one roof and raising the bar to a level other towns and cities will be envious of.” The council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Nigel Ball added: “Danum Gallery, Library and Museum, is the keeper of our com- munity’s culture, history and traditions.

It’s far more than recognition of our rich heritage though, it’s going to be a vital cog in the wheel of change for Doncaster. It’s going to empower people and bring them together.”

The Danum’s art gallery will see works loaned from the likes of the British Mu- seum and the V&A, and it also features a Rail Heritage centre that features two local locomotives. Take the virtual tour at www.heritagedon- caster.org.uk/dglam.
