e’re back! Not that most library or information ser- vices ever stopped, but it has been good to see services in all sectors beginning to restore some of the face- to-face contact that had to take a back seat during the pandemic. Whatever the longer-term future holds, it seems likely we’re in for a busy summer as information users enjoy life after lockdown.

It is a defining characteristic of the knowledge, information and library profession that we like to share. My defining memory of our community during Covid-19 will always be the way that people came together to support one another, share expertise and resources and generally help each other through this most challenging 15 months. Now is a good time to look ahead at what the future holds for our community. This month’s edition of Information Professional is packed with good ideas and insight to help you plan ahead. As I write, we have just heard the Queen’s Speech introducing the new Parliament, with a strong focus on literacy and skills. I am pleased to be working with the CILIP Information Literacy Group on a new initiative focused on Media and Information Literacy, helping people of all ages to develop “information skills for life”. We are going to be working with our Member Networks and wider community to strengthen our policy and actions around Literacy, Reading and Learning – helping to ensure that our profession plays its part in the process of post-Covid recovery. CILIP will also shortly announce the findings of our sector-wide research into the impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information professions, sponsored by Health Educa- tion England. This ground-breaking research has already fed into the development of a refreshed Professional Knowledge and Skills Base – part of our commitment to supporting a ‘digital ready’ professional workforce.

It has also been great to welcome new members to the CILIP com- munity despite the challenges of Covid. Our new membership model, introduced at the end of 2020, is giving us more options to welcome people to the community from a wider variety of roles. I am also pleased to confirm that we have been able to ‘steady the ship’ finan- cially, having successfully absorbed the impact of the pandemic on our resources.

The pandemic has been punishing for everyone, and particularly the thousands of families who have lost loved ones to the coronavirus. But we must also look ahead to the future with ambition and opti- mism. The times are changing, there is a great deal to play for, and our professional community is in good shape to carve out a place for ourselves in an increasingly connected world.
