t a recent event to launch the CILIP, CILIP SLG and School Library Association #GreatSchoolLibraries report, I had the great good fortune to be sitting next to author and library champion Cressida Cowell. Among many other sensible things she said that evening, her comment that “books and reading are a kind of magic and magic should belong to absolutely everyone” really struck a chord with me.

A

I believe that many of the challenges we face as a society are, at heart, about empathy – our ability to understand and value someone else’s experience, to put ourselves in their shoes and see the world through their eyes. No medium has the power to do this like a good book (whether on paper or a screen).

That is why I am delighted that CILIP is adopting ‘Books and Read- ing’ as our theme for 2020 – a year-long celebration of the power of books and reading in all their forms to inspire, illuminate, educate, challenge and ultimately help us model a better world. So what will we be doing? Well, for starters, thanks to our spon- sors Neilsen Book we will be using our campaign Building a Nation of Readers to bring librarians, information professionals, booksell- ers, authors and publishers together around the theme of promoting diversity and representation in books.

Drawing on this work, we will continue to work with the brilliant Judges and Steering Group for the Carnegie Greenaway Awards and with our Youth Libraries Group to implement the recommendations of the Carnegie Diversity Review. Also, as part of this, we will ensure that Pen & Inc. our magazine and listings guide celebrating diverse children’s books, reaches an even wider audience across the sector and beyond. Your free copy is included with this month’s issue of Information Professional, and you fi nd out how you can help us achieve that wider audience by turning to page 14.

We are delighted to confi rm that CILIP is a partner with the BBC, Libraries Connected and the Arts Council England on the exciting Novels that Shaped our World festival in 2020. Building on this, we will be adopting ‘Books and Reading’ as the theme for Libraries Week 2020, following on from the successful ‘Health’ and ‘Digital’ themes of the past two years.

We are determined to ensure that 2020 is a fantastic year for book- lovers, readers (of all types!) and of course librarians and information professionals!
