K&IM award winners announced

THE winners of the four awards managed by CILIP’s Knowledge and Information Management (K&IM) special interest group have been announced. The Walford Award, for outstanding contributions in KM or IM – this year sponsored by CB Resourcing – goes to Paul Corney for his work in support of making CILIP the professional body for KM – particularly in the Far and Middle East where he is recognised as a KM leader and has a high profile. As part of the KM Chartership project board he has helped ensure that the new programme avoids the pitfalls of some earlier attempts by other organisations. Paul has written several books on KM. The most recent are Navigating the Minefield and the KM Cookbook published by Facet. This year there are joint winners of the Information Manager of Year Award: Liz Hunwick, Library Services Manager and Sarah Lanney, Library Resources Manager at Basildon Healthcare Library, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Trust. This award is for making significant contributions to the discipline of K&IM

through their work and professionalism and the judging panel praised their role in raising awareness of the value and impact of knowledge and information management in their organisation. Becca Parrott, Clinical Outreach Librarian at Harlow Healthcare Library, Princess Alexandra Hospital nominated Liz and Sarah for the award. She said they had “shown dedication, tenacity and endurance, combined with the strategic prowess required to align Harlow Healthcare Library to national objectives whilst identifying and meeting the needs of Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust staff and the goals of the executive team.”

The award for Information Resources – Electronic goes to www.FullFact.org, the independent, charitable organisation that fact checks statistics, data and information on UK government, education, health, crime, immigration, law. The winner has to be available and relevant to the knowledge, information management,

information sector. Contents must show quality and depth, the website’s server has to be reliable and speedy, the site must be user- friendly, with easy navigation and a good

search engine, and content must be current and kept up to date. Judges said Full Fact “fitted absolutely all of these requirements” adding that “by concentrating on major political, social and economic issues, it makes itself the website to check quickly and effectively for the full facts behind what we are hearing from politicians and the media.” The Information Resources – Print award goes to The Knowledge Manager’s Handbook, by Nick Milton and Patrick Lambe which guides the reader through the essential steps of creating and implementing a knowledge management framework. Judges said: “This work is a practical, pragmatic and grounded approach, looking at knowledge management as it relates to people, processes, technologies and governance.

“If you are new to knowledge management, library and

this book will get you started quickly and surely. For experienced knowledge managers there are new ideas and new approaches to help move forward.”

The awards will be presented on 13 November, 5pm at CILIP HQ, London. Register to attend for free online at: https:// bit.ly/2nO2Tda.

Tony Kent Strix Memorial Lecture details revealed

DETAILS of this year’s Tony Kent Strix Annual Memorial Lecture have been released, with last year’s winner Pia Borlund delivering it.

Professor Borlund was nominated for

the Tony Kent Strix award for her work on information retrieval, and she picked up the award last year. Judges said: “Similar to the memorable Dr Tony Kent, the work by Borlund is original and innovative, and has had a significant impact on information retrieval (IR) research and applications. Her approaches are analytical and practical, and her devotion and dedication to users and interactive information retrieval (IIR) are outstanding. Within the

12 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL

IR community, Borlund is known for her innovative contributions to IR user studies, evaluations and test design, including strong, novel methodological contributions to IIR evaluation.”

Professor Borlund said her lecture “introduces the research area of interactive information retrieval (IIR),

which is

concerned with how people search for digital information. “More specifically, the presentation addresses methodological issues of IIR evaluation in terms of what it entails to study users’ use and interaction with IR systems, as well as their satisfaction with retrieved information, by presenting the

IIR evaluation model. Central to this model is the employment of simulated work task situations as assigned search tasks, which has become a standard way of testing users’ interaction and satisfaction in IR. Though this approach of assigned search tasks appears simple and easy to employ it is in fact challenging, and wrong use may have implications for evaluation results, therefore strengths and weaknesses will be discussed.”

The free event takes place on 29 November at The Geological Society, at Burlington House in London, from 1.30pm. For full details and to book a place, visit https://bit.ly/2Pe0kMM.
