CILIP AGM Member resolution passed
CILIP’s Annual General Meeting took place on 15 November and a mem- ber Resolution calling for a review of CILIP’s Employer Partner scheme was passed. The resolution raised concerns over how Employer Partners were scrutinised in terms of CILIP’s ethical code of conduct and asked that CILIP take a fresh look at the scheme. Among the calls made in the resolution was for CILIP members to be consulted over each proposed member before they were accepted on the scheme. And while the resolution is not bind-
ing, CILIP’s board has confirmed that it will address the resolution at its next full meeting, which takes place at the end of November. Chair of CILIP Board Caroline Brazier said: “The Member Resolution at our AGM in October has highlighted a number of concerns and questions from both members and non-members about the Employer Partners Scheme, which we will be considering at our next full Board meeting on the 28 November. As Trustee John Trevor-Allen said at the AGM itself, we continue to believe that a strong part- nership scheme with sector employers is
not only beneficial, it is essential to our work to strengthen the profession and to our ability to represent the interests of members and non-members working at all levels throughout the library and infor- mation sectors. “However, as a democratic, member-led organisation, we are committed to acting on the Resolution to the fullest extent allowable within the confines of our legal duties as Trustees. We will publish a statement setting out how we propose to do this as soon as possible following our meeting.”
New CILIP Board members
TWO new members will join CILP board in Janu- ary, alongside current Chair Caroline Brazier who was re-elected for a second four-year term. Dr Helen Workman and Paul Corney will join Caroline and the rest of the board from 1 January. All three join the board without the need for an election as there were four vacancies and only three applicants. Paul Corney was the sole nomination for the role of CILIP Vice President and will follow Judy Broady-Preston, when she becomes President in 2020. Paul, is a knowledge management expert and has been a CILIP K&IM Ambassador since 2017.
In his nomination form he said that his experi- ence in the KM sector would be valuable as CILIP
increases its focus on Knowledge and Information Management, saying: “[my skills] complement the future aim of CILIP to expand its global reach into K&IM and I would anticipate devoting much of my time to help it realise that vision.” Helen, Director of Learning Resources at Oxford Brookes University, said: “Given the uncertain times in which we live and the financial challenges that many of us in the library and information profession are facing, it is more important than ever that we have a robust professional body in CILIP. Having been a member of CILIP and its earlier associations for over forty years, I am now seeking an opportunity to play a role in securing its ongoing success and ensuring the delivery of its charitable objectives.”
Mentor of the Year named at CILIP AGM
CILIP’S Mentor of the Year award has been made to Julie Griffiths for her work helping mentees through professional registration and accreditation. Each year CILIP recognises the efforts of
its volunteer mentors through the award, highlighting the work they do to help other members through Professional Registration. Julie was nominated by her mentee Marg Charleseworth after guiding her through her Chartership journey. Marg said: “Julie was a very patient mentor as there were certain queries I needed to go over several times before I could get my head around what was expected. Whenever we met up Julie always had time to go through the (often many) questions that I had noted down about specific issues I had encoun- tered. Julie was able to strike a balance between answering my queries and facilitat- ing me to answer some of them for myself, or signpost me to useful sources of information.
October-November 2019
Julie is also a great ambassador for CILIP. “At the outset of my Chartership jour-
ney, I had very little understanding of what belonging to CILIP really meant despite having been a CILIP member for years. For example, with Julie’s encouragement, I applied for a CILIP North West bursary to attend my first CILIP conference. I would otherwise never have even considered put- ting in an application.” Marg adds: “Since completing my Charter- ship we have continued to stay in touch. This is testament to Julie’s genuine interest in encouraging her fellow information profes- sionals and in due course, I would also like to be able to become a mentor to others. It’s great to have this opportunity to express my appreciation.” Julie is Library Strategy and Development Manager at Halton Borough Council, and is also a trustee of Libraries Connected and a CILIP Fellow.
