Scotland’s first joint academic and public library space opens

THE University of Aberdeen has opened a significant redevelopment of The Sir Duncan Rice Library which includes a public library service – this academic/public library partnership is the first of its kind in Scotland. The redesigned space has a range of new furniture, much of it with built in charging points, and aims to provide and support wellbeing for university students and staff and to offer more opportunities for local communities to engage with the University. The new public library is called the Old Aberdeen Library because it has restored a City Council lending library to the area for the first time since the 1990s. This has been achieved by working in partnership with Aberdeen City Council, and this will be an ongoing collaboration, with a lending collection provided by Aberdeen City Libraries.

The university library says it will develop the service and lending collection further once it has been established.

Students that are already members of Aberdeen City Libraries will be able to borrow books and Aberdeen City Library staff will be on-site to help sign up staff and students who are not already members. The academic/public library will also feature regular exhibitions drawing on the University’s Library and Museum collections. The first exhibition in the new space is Sewing Resistance: teaching through Chilean textile art, which explores Chilean and Mexican history through student-made artworks.

The joint university and public library project team. Simon Bains, University Librarian

and Head of Library Services, said “I am absolutely delighted to see Old Aberdeen Library open, alongside the other improvements we have introduced to The Sir Duncan Rice Library. This will be a wonderful new service for our

students, staff and visitors. My thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to make this a reality and I’m looking forward to developing it further in partnership with Aberdeen City Library and Archives”. Further information is available at: https://bit.ly/2o81ONC
