Obituary: In memory of Captain Mark Souter MIIMS
1955 to 2023 By Mike Schwarz
News has reached the IIMS office of the passing of Captain Mark Souter, a successful small craft surveyor with a penchant for large yachts and an Institute member of some ten years standing.
A Captain, marine surveyor and published author, Mark suffered from illness for a number of years. He was an ardent fan of IIMS and a proud member. He and I struck up quite a friendship over the years after we met at a small craft training event in Athens, Greece and would chat quite often.
His experience as a professional MCA licensed
Master yacht captain stretched back more than 30 years. Mark’s additional qualifications included a diploma of Marine Surveying from Lloyd’s Maritime Academy London, Certificate in Naval Architecture, License in Electrical Mechanic and Industrial Electronics and completion of a Business Management Course in Australia.
Mark developed a keen interest in and extensive knowledge of new custom built motor yachts and their maintenance thereafter. He was involved from concept of design, contracts, specifications, and supervision and management of the vessel.
Mark wrote and published a 370 page hardback book (weight 1kg) entitled “Marine Surveying for New Motor Yachts”. In it he explores and discusses practical solutions during the concept, design, construction and delivery of new motor yachts phases.
Continuing his love of publishing, Mark then formed the Bradan Project Ltd and in 2015 launched a unique product called Bradan Golf Cards. The cards were a set of 86 black or white coloured (background) mechanical and non-mechanical golf instructional cards.
Rest in peace Captain Mark Souter.
