INDUSTRY DECARBONIZATION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY T

he UK is the fi rst country to pass a Climate Change Act (2008) and the fi rst to legally commit to a net zero carbon impact target by 2050, and BSI is playing a key role

in helping make this critical target a reality through energy decarbonization. “We have a substantial portfolio of

standards around generation, transmission, distribution, use and storage of energy,” said BSI Energy Sector Lead, Maria Varbeva- Daley. “We are revisiting many of those to refl ect the recent changes in the energy sector and the increased momentum driven by, among other things, the decarbonization imperative.” (see ‘the Four Ds’)

“However, we are also

moving increasingly into supporting innovation and are starting to look at new topics, standards gaps and activities,” she said.

“What drives our approach to energy standardization is a

new conversation about the strategic

and systems-wide role and impact standards could have in the energy sector, in the UK and globally. The sector is undergoing a fundamental transformation, given extra impetus by the increasingly apparent effects of climate change and the climate change activism inspired by the need for urgent action.”

BSI is taking a more strategic approach

to energy standardization to refl ect the decarbonization trajectory followed by UK and global energy actors, in close collaboration with UK Government and industry and

“We are involved in a number of policy-setting Government-

industry groups, and have established more strategic committees and governance structures within BSI to monitor and coordinate the direction of travel,” said Maria (see ‘Well-connected’). “Our activities and new programmes are aligned with the UK Industrial Strategy and the Clean Growth pillar within it. Many of the organizations we work with subscribe to the principles and ambitions outlined in these policies and the related legislation, and are starting to translate their commitments into action.

“We’ve also been communicating with our counterparts in Europe, and with the international standards community – via ISO and IEC for example – to ensure we are sharing best practice, avoiding unnecessary duplication and learning from each other.”
