New PASs for self-driving vehicle trials put safety first

Influential task force recognizes critical role of standards in uptake of electric vehicles BSI Energy Sector Lead, Maria Varbeva-

A report launched in January by the influential Electric Vehicle Energy Task Force (EVET) recognizes the critical role standards will play in the seamless integration of electric vehicles (EVs) with the energy system during the transition to the mass uptake of electric vehicles. The report, produced for UK Government,

lists twenty-one key proposals for actions to be taken by Government and industry to enable an effective and efficient electrification of transport, while working toward establishing a smart, flexible, low- carbon grid.

Daley said, “The report puts a strong emphasis on the role of standards and internationally agreed best practice in enabling the interoperability and the sharing of data within the EV sector and with the electricity system, while focusing on the needs of consumers. More generally, it demonstrates the increasingly high profile of standards and BSI in energy and transport decarbonization.” In 2019, George Freeman, then Minister for

the Future of Transport, said, “Government commissioned the Taskforce to advise how

we can best work with the industry to make sure the energy system is ready for the transition to electric vehicles. This report provides important evidence to shape the next stage of our Road to Zero roadmap.” Coordinating the introduction of a smart

charging infrastructure will enable network operators to balance demand and supply through an electricity grid increasingly incorporating intermittent renewable energy sources. (see ‘Energy decarbonization action intensifies’, pages 7-12). Click here to read about the report in more
