NEWS IN BRIEF
New PAS will help factories and offices get an energy efficiency
makeover A new PAS is being developed which will support the retrofitting of energy efficiency measures in existing non-domestic buildings, delivering a potential 39% cut in the energy they use.
The 1.8 million non-domestic buildings in the UK account for 12% of greenhouse gas emissions. Any reduction could have a significant impact on the UK’s CO2 emissions. Government figures show that only 8.31% of commercial buildings have an Energy Performance Certicate (EPC) rating of B or better, and only 0.69% have a rating of A or A+*. The Building Energy Efficiency Survey
produced by the Department for Energy and Climate Change in 2016 identified potential for a 39% reduction in energy use in non-domestic buildings. The BSI PAS document will align with the
Government’s Clean Growth Strategy and help to achieve a low carbon future for the UK. Policy initiatives aimed at non-domestic buildings will address those buildings that fall outside of the Government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which only applies to reducing carbon emissions from domestic properties. Environment said, “BSI’s experience supporting the Each Home Counts review and the new Trustmark Quality scheme for domestic retrofit, through the development of PAS 2035 and PAS 2030 published in 2019, provides a
useful model for non-domestic buildings.” Document drafting has begun and publication of the new standard is expected in March 2021.
