■ PUBLICTRUSTINPRREMAINSLOW Public relations is viewed as the least trustworthy profession by the public, a new report has revealed. Promoting Professionalism, which

was conducted by the Professional Associations Research Network (PARN) and funded partially by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, found that whilst only 12 per cent of the public viewed PR practitioners as transparent, this is still higher than any other profession. However, just 11 per cent trusted PR, the lowest of any profession. Two in five respondents saw PR

professionals as ‘competent’, seven percentage points higher than those who said the same about doctors, while more than a third said they saw professionals as knowledgeable. Only 16 per cent of the public saw them as ethical. Members of other professions such

as accountancy, project management and engineering, were also surveyed, and likewise identified public relations as the least trustworthy. They also viewed them to be the least knowledgeable. Other professions did, however, believe PR to be the third most caring profession, only behind health professionals and doctors, and the most reflective.
