TOKNOW COLORADO RIVER SHORTAGE – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
` Avondale residents and businesses will still have water despite the “Tier 2a” Colorado River shortage ` In August 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced a Tier 2a shortage for Colorado River operations for 2023, meaning less water supplies will be available to Arizona.
` The announcement underscores the seriousness of the extended period of drought we are experiencing. That said, due to Arizona’s priority system this shortage declaration does not mean a shortage at the tap for Avondale’s residents and businesses.
WE HAVE BEEN PREPARING FOR THIS SHORTAGE FOR DECADES, AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO ` Smart Planning:
Drought Preparedness Plan y City Council adopted a new Drought Preparedness Plan (DPP) for Avondale on October 3, 2022
y Avondale’s new DPP takes an “education first” approach and seeks to improve upon wise-water use and help the community with water-wise practices
y The DPP and any current plan stages are available at

Avondale has a 100-year Assured Water Supply Designation from the State of Arizona to ensure reliable water supplies to support responsible growth. This designation means that the City has shown continuous, physical, and legal availability of water, along with meeting water quality and financial capability standards, to maintain adequate water supplies.
` Diversification: The City has built and maintains a diverse and robust water portfolio to include renewable surface water, groundwater, and reclaimed water.
` Relentless Activity: Avondale’s water resources team continually reviews opportunities to enhance the City’s water portfolio through long-term groundwater storage credits, strong partnerships with other water entities, and ongoing efforts to promote water conservation.
USING WATER WISELY INCREASES OUR RESILIENCY ` Water conservation and efficiency practices are essential in the desert southwest. ` Being efficient with water has been part of our long-term water management. ` Up to 70% of water use occurs outdoors, which makes watering efficiently one of the best and easiest ways to save water. ` We cannot do it alone - we need everyone to become water-wise, fix leaks, and learn how to use water efficiently.
` Avondale’s Public Works team has a variety of programs and resources, as well as conservation professionals, to help you understand the impacts of drought and how to implement water-wise strategies in your daily life.
