Expect Great Rewards in Becoming a Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation

Junior Lake Lifeguard By Alba Ibarra

The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Rec- reation Junior Lake Lifeguard Program is a very suc- cessful water safety training program that introduces boys and girls to life-saving and open water rescue skills. It’s an eight-week program held during the summer for boys and girls ages 9 – 17, and is taught by highly trained Lake Lifeguards.

The program, which is being offered at Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale; Castaic Lake State Rec- reation Area in Castaic; and Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas, also instills self-confidence in each participant, and exposes them to an environment that emphasizes courtesy, respect, discipline and good sportsmanship.

“Participants not only learn about water skills, but they also learn valuable lessons that can be applied to everyday situations,” said Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area Senior Lake Lifeguard Trevor Elliott.

To join the program, candidates must be able to swim 100 yards in less than 2 ½ minutes; tread water for 3 minutes; and swim 10 yards under water. Candidates must also undergo a physical examination.

Participants also learn skills in basic lifesaving, CPR, first-aid, sun-safety and boating-safety. Once they are part of the program, participants can expect to per- form extensive swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkeling, as well as receive additional lifeguard- ing and training.

Junior Lake Lifeguards play an important role when it comes to water-safety, but they truly enjoy being both around water and helping people. Its not uncommon to see them sharing their expertise and giving swim- ming tips to others.

Experienced lifeguards follow a curriculum when training Junior Lake Lifeguards, but they also make the program fun through competitions at the three above mentioned facilities that offer the program.

Financial aid is available to help Junior Lake Lifeguard families afford this great training that’s in high de- mand, so sign up early!
