QUICK HISTORY
NGU began hosting its history lecture series in 2008 and has continued the tradition ever since. Te series was originally named the Hickson Lecture after Dr. Shirley Hickson, who retired in 2012 after 42 years of service to NGU as a history instructor, professor, and department chair.
Past lectures have included the following topics and speakers: • “American Protestants and the Gospel According to Nietzsche” – Dr. Patrick Connelly, Associate Professor of History, Montreat College • “Jefferson and Madison: Envisioning and Governing the American Republic” – Dr. A.V. Huff, Professor of History Emeritus, Furman University • “Slavery and Freedom: African American Life in the Era of the Emancipation Proclamation” – Dr. Carey Latimore, IV, Associate Professor of History, Trinity University • “Te Age of Lincoln, Ten and Now” – Dr. O. Vernon Burton, Professor of History, Clemson University
In light of NGU history instructor Robert Boggs’ recent gift to improve the lecture series, it has been renamed the Boggs-Hickson Lecture in History. Te new name honors both Hickson and Boggs’ mother, Melree, who always encouraged her son to keep reading and learning in order to succeed.
