Teachers to benefit from £8m T Level fund

Teachers and trainers will benefit from a new £8 million professional development offer from the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) to help them prepare for T Levels. The new T Level Professional Development offer will help practitioners

to develop their skills and knowledge so they are ready to deliver T Levels from 2020. Training is expected to be available from Spring 2019. The first T Level courses in education and childcare, construction and

digital will be taught in over 50 further education providers from September 2020. A further 22 courses will be rolled out from 2021 onwards. Bespoke training will focus on making sure teachers understand the pioneering new qualifications and will provide an opportunity to update subject and industry knowledge. The funding will also help sector leaders to prepare for this significant change. Anne Milton, the apprenticeships and skills minister, said: “This new offer will help teachers to build on their skills and gain the additional knowledge they need to make the new T Levels a success as soon as the starting pistol is fired.” David Russell, chief executive of the ETF, said: “We are pleased to have been given the responsibility of meeting the T Level-related professional development needs of teachers, trainers and leaders. “We bring to this role our experience, expertise and partnership ethic in

supporting the workforce to deliver the technical education our learners, employers and country need and deserve.” The T Level Professional Development offer is being developed by the

ETF in partnership with the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and the wider FE sector.

ATS holders to get Chartered Teacher Status

Holders of the Society for Education and Training’s (SET) badge of professional mastery, Advanced Teacher Status (ATS), will also automatically gain Chartered Teacher Status from the Chartered College of Teaching. ATS, which is only available through SET and is conferred by the

Education and Training Foundation (ETF), recognises experienced professionals who can demonstrate mastery in teaching and/or training, an exemplary degree of subject knowledge and effective collaboration to improve teaching standards. The inaugural cohort of 19 professionals to achieve ATS, which was launched in June 2017, will be the first to hold both ATS and Chartered Teacher Status, when the latter is conferred by the Chartered College of Teaching in 2019. The agreement between the ETF and the Chartered College of Teaching further cements the parity of professional status between teachers in the FE and training sector and those in schools. Professor Dame Alison Peacock, chief executive of the Chartered College of Teaching, said: “We want to see expertise in teaching running through the DNA of teachers across the whole profession. As with our Chartered Teacher programme, ATS celebrates evidence-informed, high-quality teaching and will play an important role in raising the status of the profession.” David Russell, the ETF’s chief executive, said: “The additional

conferment of Chartered Teacher Status is a significant reward for those who bring their high levels of skill and commitment to teaching and training and help to promote high standards across the sector.”
