The case studies in it were very relatable to my own practice and issues I face with motivation in the classroom. Susan gets the reader to think outside the proverbial box and discover how a difficult situation could be turned around into a positive learning experience. This book also signposted different literature and theories. For example, Skinner’s view on reinforcement and how this can be used in the classroom. The book is a quick, easy read and a must-have.

Teach Like a Champion Jossey Bass By Doug Lemov Over the past two years I have read and dipped in and out of this book. I am sure you have heard of it or read it. When I first read it I thought a lot of it was familiar with my teaching practice. However, dipping in and out of it I realised that although I was classed as an outstanding practitioner, there is always room for improvement and reflection within my teaching. I also noted that I have two very different styles depending on what I am teaching, whether it is the practical subjects or classroom-based ones. It really is one of those books that, no matter what career you are in, you get something out of it to take away that sticks in your mind forever. It’s a book I revisit from
time to time when I am fearing something – like my QTLS, I guess – and it quietly reassures me that you may as well do what you are fearing or live with it, never knowing ‘what if’.

The Lazy Teacher’s Handbook Crown House Publishing By Jim Smith This book has given me many new ideas to try in the classroom. I have also given it to many struggling teachers to give them some new ideas to try. The book is written with busy teachers in mind, and you can dip in and out of it easily. One of my favourite suggestions is about getting the students to prepare the recap session for the next lesson – by explaining at the beginning of the lesson that someone will be chosen to present their recap next lesson, they tend to listen more closely, and students definitely listen to the recap! Perfect!
