Maryland Trails Updates, News and Information
Public Input Needed for Potential New Trail Te Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC) is looking for input
from the public on the concept of a four-mile multi-use trail to connect Elkridge Main Street with the BWI Trail at Stoney Run Road. Accord- ing to the Howard County Business Monthly, an open house on Febru- ary 6 showcased a preliminary alignment along an unimproved mainte- nance road that could connect Furnace Avenue in Howard County with Ridge Road in Anne Arundel County. Te proposed trail will be part of the Patapsco Regional Greenway,
which would create a 40-mile multi-use trail connecting Baltimore’s In- ner Harbor to Sykesville in Carroll County along the Patapsco Valley. Te proposal is a collaboration between BMC, Anne Arundel County, Howard County, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the concept includes equestrian uses. “Initial feedback from the public will help us determine what the best
options are for this connection and also help us avoid options that might not be helpful,” Aaron Smith told Howard County Business Monthly. Smith is the vice president of the Site/Civil business unit for A. Mor- ton Tomas & Associates, which is collaborating on preliminary design work for the trail. put.com/prg. Two additional public engagement meetings will be held to solicit public input in the fall of 2024. Dates and locations have not yet been announced.
Trails in the Works at Wills Mountain State Park In March of this year, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources
purchased the former Artmor Plastics Corporation property, which is 48.53 acres in Allegany County. Te property is adjacent to a previously acquired property that is now part of the Wills Mountain State Park. According to an earlier press release from DNR, the “park will still take
some time to officially open as staff improves access to the site and gath- ers ecological and historical information about the park land.” Wills Mountain officially became a state park in 1998 when DNR
purchased 305 acres of the now 520-acre park. However, the park is lo- cated almost entirely on the ridge of the mountain, surrounded by pri- vate property. Te park has been inaccessible to the public for decades, however this most recent purchase, which includes a private road up the mountain, will open the way for public access.
DNR Outdoors Summit Te Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a Maryland
Outdoors Summit on October 9-11 at the Resort at Rocky Gap to dis- cuss various opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts including multi-use trails. “Te Summit is a space to come together and for conversations on the importance of outdoor recreation to Maryland’s environment, work- force, quality of life and economy,” according to Maryland’s Office of Outdoor Recreation.
