Equiery Life continue...

in full swing, fully ensconced in kennels with a clubhouse off Riding Stable Road and rollicking through the hills of Burtonsville, Savage, Scaggs- ville and what would eventually become Co- lumbia, Jane whipping-in to Whitney or Leiter Aitcheson every chance she got - and occasion- ally having to pull huntsman duties herself. Jane spent 30 years at NIH, most of the time supporting the search for cures to cancer, map- ping the structure of RNA and DNA, and eventually working on hydrolyzing cells with chromatography, and had her work referenced in the 1996 Handbook of Chemistry. During those years, due to the arduous nature of the research, there were no vacations. After Jane retired in 1977, she threw herself

into more hunting, and into traveling. She was particularly fond of riding trips in the west, not hanging up her spurs until 1998 at the age of 77 – but she remained ubiquitous in the horse world, staying active with the merged Howard County-Iron Bridge Hounds, regularly driving herself on 2 to 3 hour round trips to volunteer at horse functions around the state – driving until she was 90! She was a fi xture at Maryland Horse Council and TROT meetings. Whenever there were eff orts to reestablish the trails along the Patuxent River watershed (the Howard/Mont- gomery border, the old Iron Bridge stomping grounds), she was there, supporting the eff orts.

For this, in 2005, Jane Toal was presented with the Maryland Horse Council’s Pumphrey Me- morial Award for “behind the scenes” service to the Maryland equestrian community.

Anne Moe: Equiery’s “It Girl” by Crystal Brumme Pickett, publisher On September 3, T e Equiery lost a member of our family when staff er Anne Moe passed away after a brief battle with late-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly known as ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s disease”). Where to begin with Anne? Not with the usual, formulaic obit. She was our Annie. I have known Anne for 25 years.

She was one of the fi rst women to embrace me in the world of fox- chasing – and she had the “certain something” that all the young women in the club wanted to emulate – and single men wanted to date! A physical combination of Mary Martin and Sandy Duncan, with a Mary Tyler Moore smile that lit up the world – who wouldn’t want to be Anne or be with Anne? Anne made ev- erything fun, and made everyone seem wonderful and feel wonderful. T e embodiment of je ne sais quoi, wearing a Norwegian sweater with mittens, drinking a Stroh’s Light instead of champagne!

Our world has dimmed a little bit. Born September 25, 1938 to Harry and Es-

ther Larson of Scarville, Iowa, Anne Margue- rite Moe (née Larson) began a lifetime love aff air with horses on the family farm with the workhorses,

rid-

ing aboard the drafts as they returned home from the fi eld. She taught a blind pony to jump – and then, ever the imp, rode him up the steps of her one- room schoolhouse! Innately adventure-

some, the fi rst chapter of Anne’s life included summers working at Glacier National Park

in Montana, and travel to Switzerland as an exchange student. Her love of language led her to a degree in English from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. (And for fans of Golden Girls, yes, there really is a St. Olaf College – who knew?!) Anne and then husband Paul Moe moved to Howard County, Maryland in 1964; they had three sons (Tony, Bennett and Peter). Anne was
