purchase, as well as a cash bar. “We are also placing more food booths up by

the big tents and out by the Sunken Road and Start Box, as well as in the traditional vendor area,” explained executive director Carla Gei- ersbach. “We want people to be able to wander around the whole grounds and [have] provided places to eat in a variety of locations.” Also new for 2017 is Lawn Box Seating on

Sunday for show jumping. T is ticketing pack- age includes two Sunday VIP parking passes, six admission passes, a private seating area with six Adirondack chairs, signage for your private box and Sunday Fair Hill Club passes. T e Lawn Box area will be on the hill between the main arena and the VIP Tent. “We are also of- fering group ticketing packages for those who want a tailgate spot on Saturday and Lawn Box for Sunday,” Geiersbach added. In addition, the Elk Forge Inn will have a

Tea Tent with patio furniture off ering high tea, scones and more. Saturday tailgating spots along the cross-

country route have almost sold out with more people buying up their same spots as soon as they become available. Look for T e Equiery along the main gallop lane above the Kids’

Corner and beer tent! And yes, the local craft beer garden and sports expo will be back for 2017. As always, there will be plenty of shopping opportunities avail- able, as Geiersbach re- ported that the main vendor tent

sold out

in early September, and there were only a few outdoor spots re- maining open.

FHI has expanded its hospitality areas as well as spreading food vendors out across the grounds.

General admission is free on T ursday, costs $10 on Friday and $15 for Saturday or Sunday. Children under 12 are free as are 4-H and FFA members with current ID and U.S. Pony Club members with pins on. FHI also off ers free general admission to military members and their dependents with valid IDs.

Pure Entertainment And if the competition itself were not en-

tertainment enough, there are several dem- onstrations, music, and more throughout the weekend. “T e Juggling Hoff mans were very well received last year so they will be back this year again,” said Geiersbach. T e Magi- cal Illusions of Kyle and Kelly also return for Saturday. T e Chincoteague Pony Drill Team (Satur- day and Sunday) and DVCTA Quad Squad (T ursday) will be doing performances up by the main arena. And for all you dog lovers out there…

Don’t forget to stop by The Equiery’ s tailgate in

our usual spot along the main gallop lane just above the Kids’ Corner!

bring your dogs! Keeping them on leashes of course! Frisbee Dogs will be back on Sun- day doing demonstrations above the main arena. T e Dog Agility area will be open

Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Spectators can try their own hand at teaching their dogs to navigate the course.

Running and Racing

With all the buzz around the possibility of FHI to host a CCI4* in the near future (see sidebar), FHI welcomes two other forms of outdoor competition to this year’s fes- tival with a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday morning, and an all day Gravel Bike Race over on

the Sawmill Field. “We have met so many diff erent people from

diff erent sport groups while preparing our four- star bid,” Geiersbach said. “T ese races during the festival are a great way to integrate all the diff erent people who use Fair Hill for sport.” T e Gore Running Wear 5K Run takes place

early Saturday morning with the cross-country course running through parts of the actual CCI course, staying off the gallop lanes. “T e run- ners will be able to see what the venue is like during the international, and we hope they then stay to watch the cross-country,” Gei- ersbach explained. All runners will be off the course before the fi rst horse and rider set out of the start box. Runners will also receive two general admission passes as well as two Beer Garden passes.

Dabble in the Gravel Off road Criterium will be put on by Wooden Wheels Bike Shop at the Sawmill Field on Saturday as well between 9am and noon. What is “off road criterium?” T ink NASCAR on bikes! Cyclists ride a 1.7 mile loop on gravel roads and dirt roads for 45 min- utes. T e person who completes the most laps in 45 minutes is the winner.
