The Equiery’s First Annual Artist Contest
T e Equiery has a long tradition of celebrating local artists on Equiery covers and hanging their work on the walls of our offi ce. With the popularity of our annual photography contest, it only seemed fi tting that we off er a new contest specifi cally for Maryland non-photography artists. T e contest rules were simple – open to Maryland residents submitting original artwork in any two-dimensional or three-dimensional medium other than photography. Entries came in from all over the state in a variety of media. T ese are T e Equiery’s staff favorites for each medium submitted.
BEST ACRYLIC: T e Best Acrylic entry goes to the overall Grand Champion winner Alana Beall of Monk- ton. Her work entitled “Marquis” is featured on this month’s cover. Read more about this piece and the artist on page 17 of this issue.
BEST WATERCOLOR: T e Best Watercolor entry goes to Meredith Ingram of Gaithersburg. Her work entitled “Water Horse” was also one of the fi rst entries to the contest!
BEST PASTEL/CHALK: Did you know that Christine Hajek of New Market, founder of Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue, is also an art- ist?! Her work entitled “Klondike” was the staff ’s favorite pastel or chalk entry.
BEST DIGITAL: Jennifer Tordella of Olney started this piece as a colored pencil sketch but felt she couldn’t quite capture the feel she wanted so she scanned her sketch and used the paint app on her computer to come up with this digital entry.
BEST SCULPTURE: We received several sculpture entries including two from Natalie Patricia Lasko of Adam- stown. Her plastilina clay sculpture en- titled “Old Friends” won Best Sculpture while her bronze horse head piece was also fabulous to look at.
BEST OIL: Valerie A. Frank of Walkersville submitted this piece called “Mac’s Delight.” T e massive 36’’ x 36’’ painting was our top pick for Best Oil painting.
Don’t forget that ALL art contest entries
BEST PENCIL: Mary Gubisch of Columbia submitted two pencil drawings that were both staff favorites. T is untitled piece narrowly won out over her other entry as best pencil.
