Former Marylander Lindsay Elizabeth [Holmberg] Brown of Luray, VA, died on May 23 at the age of 45. Brown was born in Wash- ington, D.C. She was a horse trainer and riding instructor.

Allen of Upper Marl- boro died on May 29. He was 83. Born in Wampum. PA, Allen graduated from Wam- pum High School in 1958 before attend- ing Baldwin-Wallace and Youngstown State University. He was a professional baseball player for the Philadel- phia Phillies, Washington Senators, Millwau- kee Brewers and Chicago White Sox. He also
was a baseball scout for many years. After retiring from baseball, Allen became
involved with T oroughbred racing and opened Allen Barn. Allen was the fi rst African-Amer- ican trainer to saddle a horse in the Ken- tucky Derby. According to Equibase. com, Allen logged 2,347 starts as a train- er to win 286 times, fi nished second 298 times and third 248 times for career earn- ings of $3,641,407. Allen’s most winning horse was Northern Wolf (Wolf Power x Glenorthern, by Northern Fling). T e Maryland-bred won $461,107 in earn- ings in three seasons of racing from 1988 to 1990.
Kimball Curtis Firestone of Middle- town died on June 3 at the age of 90.
Firestone owned Firestone’s Culinary Tavern in Frederick and was a former executive of Fires- tone Tire and Rubber Company. Firestone also
bred T oroughbred racehorses. He was born in Los Angeles, CA, and earned a BA degree and a Masters of Business Administration de- gree from Stanford University. Firestone also served in the U.S. Army before working full time for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which his grandfather founded. In 1969, he moved the company’s government aff airs offi ce to Washington, D.C., and remained with the company until resigning in 1976. Firestone managed his own breeding farms,
fi rst in Potomac and then later in Middletown. He was a dedicated and hands-on operator working with the horses, and enjoyed the sci- entifi c process of breeding T oroughbreds. He was a member of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association’s Board of Directors. In 2013, Firestone published a book entitled
