Preparing for Today’s Realities and Tomorrow’s Opportunities

“Bad things do happen in the world, like war, natural disasters, disease. But out of those situations always arise stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.” —Daryn Kagan, American broadcast journalist

First, I’d like to send a special greeting to those of you reading this at the 2022 Senior Living Executive Conference & Expo. On behalf of Argentum and our partners at HMP Global, I am so pleased you’ve joined us at this in-person event

to collaborate, network, plan, and enjoy time with one another. If we’ve learned anything over the past few years, it’s that we are always better together. Welcome to Minneapolis; we’re glad you’re here. In this issue of Senior Living Executive, we focus on the importance of preparedness and specifically, the roles of prevention (p.8), prediction (p.14), and education (p.23) in disaster planning. These are areas where the industry has certainly grown as a result of the immediate crisis that fell upon the world in early 2020. But as I look back at the years marred by COVID-19 and its impact on the industry, I can’t help but be hopeful for what lies ahead for senior living. I already knew our industry’s workforce was a woven tapestry of heroes, but the extraordinary dedication, grit, and compassion shown by senior living associates like you throughout the pandemic was accentuated for all to see. (In the next issue of the magazine, you’ll see profiles of the 2022 Argentum Hero Award winners.) Additionally, throughout the crisis, I have been inspired by the tremendous resiliency of the industry—the obstacles were many, but senior living companies and communities managed to provide essential support to residents and families despite a lack of federal resources and financial relief and inconsistent public health guidance.

For these reasons among others, there continues to be a strong demand for the care and services offered by senior living. In fact, industry occupancy has trended upward in the past two quarters on record, according to data from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC). And the industry is poised for growth due to the vital need to respond to a rapidly aging population. However, critical challenges for the industry certainly remain—an ongoing labor crisis, increased scrutiny from policymakers, and continued financial setbacks, to name a few (read more on p. 53). That’s why we remain steadfast in prioritizing federal and state advocacy at the forefront of our work at Argentum. I am calling on each of you to join our Argentum Advocates program (argentum. org/argentumadvocates) and to participate in grassroots outreach. Through this program, our collective voices will reach essential stakeholders in Congress, the administration, and in state capitols across the country. There’s no doubt that we can make senior living better, together.

I hope you enjoy this issue and if you’re in Minneapolis, please stop and say hello. — James Balda
