Q&A WITH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

How do you use your dining program to increase engagement?

“We look for innovative ways to elevate the dining experience. Patio dining by reservation only has allowed our chef to prepare a special menu in a more intimate setting creating excitement around the dining experience. Five table of four residents are seated under the stars with music, full linens and themed centerpieces. Residents can linger, as tables do not need to be turned and the intimate setting enhances conversation and increased interaction with staff .”

Lynn Thaxton, CDAL Executive Director Five Star Senior Living Premier Residences of Plantation

“We use dining in our assisted living neighborhood as a way to engage our residents socially and give them an opportunity to reminisce about the people and feelings they associate with their favorite foods. In our memory care neighborhood, we use familiar aromas and music to set the tone and help our memory care residents feel secure. We serve foods butler-style for each course, to eliminate the anxiety that can come from decision- making for those with dementia This engages and gives them confi dence.”

Amber Patton, CDAL Executive Director

Five Star Senior Living Morningside of Paducah

“We infuse our family and home culture into the dining program to create great food and fellowship. Through our dining committees, we take old favorites and incorporate new ideas, then invite residents to taste and sample items to evaluate as possible menu additions. Our Flavor of Home program welcomes residents to submit favorite family recipes which we consider as a monthly featured dish. We also hold food demonstrations, happy hours, and Chef Center Stage events, which empower our chefs to be creative.”
