Through Each Operations Task, You Create Community

“’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free ’Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be…” —Shaker song, traditional

It feels strange and unseemly to be writing about delicious adventures in dining at this time. Our press time caught us right at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis; please check Argentum’s website (argentum.org) for updates that can help you and your residents and staff get through.

I’m thinking about how many are dining on paper plates in their rooms, on food

that’s nutritious, but maybe not at the level of variety or presentation they’re used to— and the executive directors and managers, lucky to grab a trail mix bar or lukewarm coff ee in their long work hours. We’re all missing the contact of loved ones and the comfort of being together. Bad news sooner or later is going to at least brush by us. Some are deep in sickness or grief, and the rest of us grieve with them. Eating alone or hurriedly may not seem like a big problem by comparison. But

there’s nothing trivial about it. It’s emblematic of how we’ve been cast back on our own inner resources. But in senior living, those inner resources are deep; that’s true for residents and workers alike. One doesn’t get to a certain age without getting through some hard times. And many working in this industry have been drawn here by loss or by seeing need and wanting to do something about it. Two of the women profi led in this issue (p.30 and p.31) speak of the experience of enjoying eating alone, being mindful to every bite. Others illuminate where our food comes from (p.29), how it nourishes and heals (p.20), how it shows the great diversity among us (p.16), how we can value it and not waste it (p.22). To feed oneself or others is a simple and profound act. Even now, we can give ourselves permission to experience it as such. To help preserve food safety during this crisis, ServSafe is off ering free training and resources, including safe delivery: Visit servsafe.com. Finally, while this situation is changing daily, I hope you can read Argentum Advocates for You (p.38). Members, Argentum leadership, and leaders from other associations have been battling practically around the clock to ensure vulnerable residents and employees are fi rst in line for protection, assistance, testing, and treatment. Please see the Coronavirus Preparation and Response Toolkit at argentum.org/coronavirustoolkit for resources, latest best practices, and state and

federal updates.
