THOUGHTS PIGEONNIER
FROM THE
3 THINGS I’VE LEARNT
THIS ISSUE P11
Price growth for coastal property in France is slowing – so maybe it’s time to buy that seaside home
P40
‘Castelling’ – or forming a giant human pyramid
– is something you might see if you buy a home near Perpignan!
P92
The orientation of roofs in some ski resorts must be in line with other
properties in the area in order to give a
uniform appearance
As someone who lived onboard a boat for several years, I don’t need convincing about the powerful and positive effect of living by the water. The soothing sounds, the tranquil views and the local wildlife all contribute to a sense of wellbeing. Check out three lovely riverside homes on p16 before turning to p34 to read all about life on the French riverbanks. Water’s never far away when you’re in France. As Carolyn Reynier writes about the Perche area of Normandy (p70), “water is omnipresent – in the wetlands, rivers and streams, peat bogs and ponds”. Then there’s Brittany (p24) with its 1,500 miles of stunning coastline and Grasse (p58) with its hilltop sea views. Why not go with the flow yourself and choose a home close to the water. France is famous for another liquid, of course – wine – so perhaps you’ll fancy following in the footsteps of inspirational expat winemaker Sally George (p30). “It’s never too late to change your life,” she says. “My advice is go for it and don’t look back!”

EDITOR’S PICK Hérault townhouse Inside and out, this three- ensuite-bedroom property has the wow factor, from the plunge pool – originally a 19th-century fountain – to the stained-glass windows, stone fireplaces and wooden beams. Work has been carried out by traditional artisans, one of whom renovated the Orient-Express Wagons, while doors come from London’s Savoy hotel, wooden corbels from a wine domain and floor tiles from Italy. Offering 400m2 of living space, the house is in a small town with all amenities on the Canal du Midi. €669,000.
