LOCATION Property tye

Breton longère This is literally ‘a long house’, a traditional, single-storey property found throughout rural areas. Near the coast or on high ground, the back of the house will face the stronger winds, and they’re usually built from local granite. Longères range from €180,000 to €400,000 in price depending on size and location.

Neo-Breton house Although these houses seem an integral part of Brittany’s landscape, neo-Breton homes only started to appear in the 1960s. They have slate roofs, white walls, granite door and window surrounds, and a useful drive-in garage beneath the property. Priced from €95,000 they’re popular, practical and tend to need updating rather than renovation.

Fisherman’s cottage These cottages vary but are usually stone properties that once housed local fishermen and are therefore always within walking distance from the sea. Because they’re coastal as well as picturesque, Fisherman’s cottages tend to be in great demand and can get snapped up very quickly. These character properties usually start at €200,000.

). A chaumière in good condition will set you back at least €450,000.

Chaumière A chaumière (from the word chaume for straw) is a thatched cottage, but they rarely come up for sale. They can start at €150,000, a reasonable price to reflect the fact that they need regular maintenance (averaging €600 a year) and re-roofing every 50 years (at €130/ m2

Farmhouse Breton farms are usually granite-built and come with plenty of land, as well as countless outbuildings perfect for conversion, which will suit growing families or business projects. If you have a €250,000 budget to play with, you will have a wide range of well-maintained farms from which to choose in locations across the whole region.

Fougères stands at the foot of a vast fortress complex

Village house This area has a plentiful supply of charming villages and small towns, some of which have even earned a place on the prestigious list of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. The downside is that they may not have much outside space. If you’re happy to do some updating and decorating, you can buy a village house from €65,000 ready to live in.
