JOIE DE VIVRE
DID YOU KNOW?
During World War I, the French army was the fi rst to use camoufl age techniques to conceal soldiers and equipment on the battlefi eld. They established the world’s fi rst military unit dedicated to camoufl age called the Section de Camoufl age. This unit consisted of artists, known as camoufl eurs, who used their artistic skills to develop innovative camoufl age techniques. The French army recognised the need for eff ective camoufl age due to the use of aerial reconnaissance and the proximity of opposing trenches on the Western Front. They used a combination of colour, texture and shapes to blend them into their surroundings and make them less visible to the enemy. Their pioneering work in camoufl age during World War I had a signifi cant impact on military tactics and strategies, and laid the foundation for modern military camoufl age.
