Safer City - Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls Initiative (P-VaWG) update

SECURiTY PARTNERSHiP UPDATES: Workplace

Domestic Abuse Response Handbook

Since its launch in November 2023, the Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls Initiative (P-VaWG) – #Our Safer City – has made continued progress, now encompassing ten core initiatives and twenty collaborative projects with related organisations. Recent highlights include:

Safe Havens: In collaboration with the City Security Council (CSC), there are now 24 Safe Havens in the City of London, with 37 additional locations in development. These Safe Havens provide vulnerable individuals a secure place to rest and access essential services, including Wi-Fi, landline telephones, and assistance with contacting

family, friends, or emergency services. Greene King have agreed to pilot this scheme at 12 of their London sites.

Safe Haven App lets you locate the nearest Safe Haven and access real-time support, and is being continually updated.

The Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA) has launched a new handbook on implementing a workplace response to domestic abuse. This comprehensive guide provides employers with the tools and strategies to support employees experiencing domestic abuse. (See article on page 27)

New Chair of Governance Board for Chartered Security Professionals

The Register of Chartered Security Professionals is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Dyson QPM DL, former Commissioner of the City of London Police, as the new Chairman of the Governance Board for the Chartered Security Professionals Registration Authority (CSPRA). This follows the sad passing of Ruth Henig CBE JP DL, who previously held this position.

Edward Wurster CSyP, MSyL, Consultant, Countermeasures Assessment & Security Experts (CASE)

I began my security career in a suburban hospital and this helped me to learn the importance of team building, with both the security professionals employed by the facility and stakeholders, including staff and local law enforcement.

This community setting allowed me to interact with those I was helping to protect and although I eventually moved to larger settings where getting to know everyone was nearly impossible, those early experiences helped me “put a face” on those I was responsible for protecting.

Taxi Marshalling: Launched in November 2023 at Liverpool Street Station, the taxi marshalling service operates on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, helping people get home safely from this busy area. To date, the scheme has facilitated 7,700 journeys for a total of 13,573 passengers, 32.8% of whom were lone females.

Ask for Angela and WAVE Training: The "Ask for Angela" initiative, coupled with WAVE (Welfare and Vulnerability Engagement) training, is being widely implemented in licensed venues across the City of London. Individuals feeling unsafe or threatened can discreetly seek help by asking for "Angela". This code phrase signals trained staff to provide support and assistance.

Don Randall MBE CSyP shared his thoughts on the appointment: “Throughout his policing career, Ian has consistently demonstrated wise judgement, compassion, and understanding in his decisions.

“These are qualities that Lady Ruth practised abundantly, and we believe she would fully endorse Ian’s appointment.” (See page 32 article on Ruth Henig)

In addition to Ian Dyson's appointment, the Register is also pleased to welcome two new Deputy Registrars: Carl Lees CSyP FSyI and Mike Daikin CSyP.

I contribute much of my success to the support of my wife, Karen. She not only endures many weeks alone, she also has a strong knowledge of security and is able to provide valuable feedback.

I have worked at many organisations, and two pivotal ones are: leading the public safety training for Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania and serving as Training and Exercise Chief for the South-eastern Pennsylvania Regional Task Force. Both experiences provided me with my first interactions in a global capacity, working with responders in Canada, South Korea, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

In 2012, I joined PPL Corporation (one of the top investor-owned utilities in the United States) to develop their business continuity and emergency management strategies. I rose through the ranks to Chief Physical Security Officer.
