You may also have smoke escape hoods on board the aircraft. These work using filtration.
Filtration Escape Hoods - Allows the user to breathe contaminated air via a filter device for a period of time, depending on contaminant level of the air. Check the directions on each for useful time.
While some operations require Portable Breathing Equipment (PBEs) for the crew, there are no regulations that require smoke hoods for passengers. The typical passenger oxygen masks have ambient air valves that allow smoke into the mask providing zero protection from contaminated air. More and more operators have opted to carry small portable smoke hoods for each passenger, providing additional protection. These smoke hoods also come in handy for crew and passengers at home, while traveling commercially and staying in hotels.
