LITHIUM BATTERY
FIRE PROCEDURES NOTE: Devices should be in Airplane Mode. This diminishes the chance of overheating and Thermal Runaway.
WARNING: Time is critical during smoke/fire/fumes emergencies. The crew should consider an immediate landing anytime the situation can’t be controlled.
CAUTION: Passenger oxygen masks should not be deployed when performing smoke or fire procedures.
Thermal Runaway Fire Fighting Procedures: 1. Relocate Passengers away from area. 2. Alert Flight Deck Crew.
3. Don smoke hood and fire gloves. If passengers have smoke hoods have them Don their hoods. The smoke from burning lithium is extremely toxic.
4. If safety permits unplug device. 5. Use Halon to suppress flames in surrounding area. 6. Use FireBane or H20 Extinguisher (if available) to cool device after flames are eliminated. 7.
In the absence of a H20 Extinguisher use any NON-flammable liquid to cool the device.
8. After device has cooled. you can consider placing device into Firesock or other mitigation device. Secure the device in a safe place away from passengers.
NOTE: The device should be unplugged as soon as safety permits to prevent an additional thermal runaway. Cooling prevents further overheating.
WARNING: Do not attempt to pick up and move a smoking or burning device! Hot liquids may explosively discharge causing bodily injury.
WARNING: Do not cover the device with ice, towels, blankets, etc. as these will act as insulators increasing the likelihood of further overheating.
If 30 Minutes or Less from Suitable Airport: Leave device and douse as necessary with water. Prepare cabin for landing seating passengers in approved seats away from device. Update cockpit as necessary.
If More than 30 Minutes from Suitable Airport:
When device no longer exhibits indications of overheating prepare to relocate device. Consider use of a containment bag once situation has resolved.
Relocation Procedures: Empty all contents (including trash bag) from a metallic aircraft trash container and or ice drawer and fill with enough water to cover the device.
Leave container open (deployed) until necessary to stow for landing. Update cockpit as necessary. Have airport fire department declare the fire out.
NOTE:Wait at least 10 minutes after visible indications of overheating before approaching device. Inflight Fire and Smoke 10
