Know Your Equipment


EXTINGUISHER OPERATION Knowing how to recognize and identify a fire, along with donning protective equipment are only part of the puzzle. Understanding your equipment and knowing how to retrieve and operate are equally important. Halon


1. Remove bottle from bracket. 2. Pull pin. 3. Hold bottle upright, aim at base of fire. 4. Squeeze trigger. 5. Use side to side sweeping motion.


Water


1. Remove bottle from bracket. 2. Twist handle as far right as possible. 3. Hold bottle upright, aim at base of fire. 4. Depress lever. 5. Use side to side sweeping motion.


The National Fire Protection Agency recommends an easy way to remember the proper use of a fire extinguisher; it is the acronym PASS.


P repare bottle (pull safety pin or twist handle); A im at base of fire and hold fire extinguisher upright; S queeze trigger to fire bottle; and, S pray/Sweep the fire in a side-to-side, spray painting motion.


How to Handle an Inflight Fire


The first sign of smoke/fire emergency may be a sight, a sound or a smell. When you detect a problem in the cabin or on the flight deck react in a calm and professional manner. Quickly think through the problem and recall your training. Do not unnecessarily alarm the passengers.


Basic firefighting procedures:


• Determine the source and classify the fire if possible • Communicate to the crew and get help if necessary • Move passengers away from area if possible • Pull related circuit breakers if fire is electrically energized • Retrieve and don PBE if necessary • Retrieve suitable fire extinguisher. Class A,B,C,D • When using a fire extinguisher bottle utilize “PASS” procedure • Contain area or device after extinguishing • NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE FIRE! • Assign ABP as fire area monitors and assistants • Continue monitoring and update the crew • Ready the aircraft for landing • Use passengers, to run messages to cockpit and/or fetch needed equipment
