HYPOXIA AWARENESS TRAINING
Aircare FACTS ROBD (Reduced Oxygen Breathing Device) Training all crewmembers in hypoxia awareness plays an important role in protecting crew members from the dangers of hypoxia.
The insidious nature of this problem has been graphically demonstrated by several accidents and incidents. Hypoxia awareness training for all crewmembers is essential in giving all crewmembers the ability to recognize and react to this potentially catastrophic event.
Using the Reduced Oxygen Breathing Device (ROBD), crews experience the effects of hypoxia in a safe, classroom environment, learning to recognize their own personal early warning signs of hypoxia.
It is important to know your own personal signs and symptoms of hypoxia
Hypoxia symptoms vary greatly… from dizziness, to confusion, to numbness, to sleepiness, and many others. The key to surviving a hypoxic event is early recognition.
Lack of appropriate response Past accidents have shown us air crew may sometimes not recognize the onset of hypoxia. Confusion and disorientation during the initial onset of a hypoxic emergency will contribute to the poor outcome during these events. The crew’s ability to respond quickly and efficiently can be hampered by the lack of awareness of their own symptoms of hypoxia. Early recognition stands out as the single best way to combat hypoxia.
The Aircare FACTS ROBD (Reduced Oxygen Breathing Device) is a next generation training tool designed to safely simulate different altitudes so the participants can experience the effects of hypoxia in a controlled manner.
The advantages of the ROBD:
• The ability to accurately and reliably induce hypoxia with no risk of decompression sickness, inner ear or sinus trauma, or other “internal issues”
• The ability to participate in a safe, controlled, classroom environment • The ability to induce hypoxia while students perform psychomotor and cognitive testing • The ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of hypoxia • The ability to execute the proper emergency procedures to counter the threat
By providing this type of training to all members of the crew, we can assure an increase in overall awareness of this potential problem. Participants in the Aircare FACTS Hypoxia Awareness Training program have the opportunity to not only identify their own symptoms, but to see the reaction of others as well.
These differences in reaction time and severity tend to highlight the need for teamwork in an emergency. Noticing subtle changes in each crewmember’s ability to perform increases situational awareness. This crew coordination is invaluable during an emergency.
The real value of the Aircare FACTS Hypoxia Awareness Training centers around heightening the level of awareness of each crewmember and to work together to recognize the subtle signs of hypoxia. By showing each crewmember how hypoxia looks and feels, we can demonstrate in a convenient, safe and effective way, the insidious nature of this problem and increase the overall awareness in the entire flight department.
