Support for SEND

Emma Griffin profiles products and workshops designed to enable pupils with special educational needs to better access the curriculum and gain more from school

Percussion Play Outdoor environments can be a challenge for some pupils, but Percussion Play’s diverse instruments are designed to make such spaces enjoyable and enriching. Drumming stimulates both the creative and logical sides of the brain, which is partly why it is so effective in supporting pupils with ASD. Playing percussion can also encourage social interaction without forcing close proximity, and there may be many health benefi ts ranging from improved sleep to boosting the immune system. Ideal for inclusive playgrounds and sensory gardens, Percussion Play’s multiplayer Duo is accessible for wheelchair users and is sensory rich, while its Tubular Bells produces deep tones that can be felt as well as heard. percussionplay.com

Street Style Surgery These workshops aim to improve communication and interpersonal skills using games, contemporary media, thought-provoking discussions and fun-fi lled activities. In Getting Your Ideas Across, the course leader will take pupils from idea development to presentation in a multi-stage workshop that uses art, cameras, computers, blogging and poster making. The workshop covers skills related to citizenship, peer-to-peer learning and any topics that pupils select themselves. Pupils will also learn how to communicate using non-verbal methods. Workshops usually run over one day, but could extend over four days with add-ons, and can accommodate ten to 25 pupils. streetstylesurgery.co.uk

‘We currently have both the ExamReader and ReaderPen in school. These pens are being used by eight of our pupils for whom English is an additional language. The pens defi nitely meet the needs of the students: they have helped them become a lot more independent and their performance has increased in all areas.’ Simon Glickman, headteacher, Toras Emes Primary School
