FOCUS ON GRANTS MUSIC

St Anthony’s has been using the

Schools Singing Programme for 13 years. We serve an inner-city area that is one of the 20% most deprived communities in the

country. From a starting point of very few trained singers, we now have a fully established chamber

choir, experts who have joined the cathedral and parish choirs, and individual soloists.

in cathedral and church choirs. We believe that choirs foster a deep engagement that positively influences educational attainment and promotes wellbeing and social interaction as well as a sense of belonging.’ The National Schools Singing

Programme supports the music curriculum by offering weekly, whole-class professional tuition during the school day. Choral directors lead singing lessons with content to suit particular year groups. This can include music for school liturgies blended with interactive music education, plus games and secular repertoire that supports musical engagement and progression. Additionally, the Hamish Ogston

Foundation is providing £750,650 over five years to expand the Keyboard Studies Programme within the Diocese of Leeds. This programme provides children in primary schools with weekly music lessons and a clearly defined progression route for

those with musical aptitude, with the possibility for some to apply to study at top international universities or conservatoires. Pupils begin with the melodica and later transition to larger keyboard instruments: the accordion, piano and ultimately the pipe organ.

The provision was noted as

exceptional in our recent inspection, assisting us in reaching an

outstanding grade. It supports our music curriculum and our Catholic

life to the full. The children love the range of secular and contemporary music offered, delivered in such a fun way by all staff.

Lisa Leonard, headteacher at St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School

We were extremely fortunate to be subsidised by the National Schools Singing Programme, which has enabled us to work with the Diocesan programme in Leeds. Not only has the programme ignited our pupils’ passion for music, but it has also inspired a love of singing across the whole school. Our choral director delivers weekly sessions that are creative and engaging. As our sessions are led by music experts, the

quality of the delivery is excellent; it is also a wonderful CPD opportunity for staff. As a result of the programme’s success within our school, we

will be engaging in the Keyboard Studies Programme, whereby pupils in Year 4 will learn to play the melodica. We are certainly beginning to orchestrate our way to musical success!
