KEEPING UP THE CHORAL TRADITION: THE NATIONAL SCHOOLS SINGING PROGRAMME
E
stablished by the Diocese of Leeds more than a decade ago, the Schools Singing Programme has grown to
become a leading choral provision, reaching 6,000 children weekly in around 150 choral groups. These include the six choirs of Leeds Cathedral and the Boys’ and Girls’ choirs in Bradford, Keighley, Huddersfield, Wakefield and Pontefract – some of the most deprived areas of Yorkshire. Now, £3.95million in funding
from the Hamish Ogston Foundation is enabling the project to be rolled out to Catholic primary and secondary schools across the
country as the National Schools Singing Programme. Entrepreneur Hamish Ogston CBE – whose Foundation funds projects in music, health and heritage – was himself a chorister and is keen to support the choral tradition. According to the Foundation’s music project director Jo Clunie: ‘The preservation of the choral tradition in the UK starts with ensuring children are exposed to music and singing at a young age.
