AROUND GOOD FOOD W

examples of how food creates fellowship.

The annual Strawberry Social at Landis Homes is a much-anticipated event that builds community among residents. Started in the early 1970s, it has stood the test of time. The Landis Homes Women’s Auxiliary hosted the Strawberry Social from 1971 to 2015. The ladies would even make homemade ice cream for it. Since 2015, the event has continued to grow.

All the strawberries used this year came directly from Harvest Lane Farm Market, located just to the west of Landis Homes. This means that some residents can watch as the strawberries are grown and picked. According to Daniel McClain, Landis Homes Director of Dining Services, the Strawberry Social uses approximately 7,000 strawberries – that’s 300 pounds of these locally-grown treats!

Life Enrichment Assistant, Anita Miller, helps facilitate the social and has experienced firsthand how food can unite an otherwise diverse group.

“The enjoyment of food is something we have in common,” she says. “A social gives a reason to come together and share that common ground and, in the process, we’re getting to know new people or getting to know new things about people we already know!”

Landis Homes isn’t the only affiliate finding community around food. Landis Place on King (LPK) celebrated their first anniversary on May 28. Residents enjoyed pizza from The Rendezvous restaurant as they shared memories from the community’s first year. Residents of LPK have a regular schedule of pot luck and social events that bring them together.

Welsh Mountain Home Director of Culinary Services, Paula Phenneger, is a highly trained French chef. She’s witnessed the power of a good meal. “Food is like music!” she shares. “It brings people together. It’s creating a symphony of ingredients.”

Gathering around delicious food is how community is deepened, joy abounds, and relationships that will last a lifetime are cultivated.

hether you’re gathering around a table to share a meal, congregating at a bonfire making s’mores, or sharing a bag of popcorn during a movie, food brings people together. Throughout Landis Communities, there are many
