WHY I SERVE F
orty-three individuals volunteer their time and talents as members of one of the five boards of directors overseeing Landis Communities and its affiliates. Tis column features a member of one of the boards and lists those who serve with the highlighted individual.
Tell me about yourself…My parents moved to the United States from India in the 1970s. I grew up outside Goshen, Indiana and attended Goshen College. I moved to Lancaster as part of a volunteer service assignment through Mennonite Central Committee. I worked for a local non-profit, ASSETS – two years as a volunteer and then another three in a director position. I settled here, married my wife and together we have raised three kids. We like to travel, I coach soccer and also enjoy running. I’ve always had an interest in real estate. After ASSETS, I became a property manager for other companies and 10 years ago, I left that to work full time for myself as a real estate investor.
When did you first hear of Landis Communities? Having attended a Mennonite church, I’ve known about Landis Homes for quite some time. My in-laws moved to Landis Homes about 3 years ago. As plans were developing for Steeple View Lofts, I was asked to serve on a committee. I loved the creative reuse of the building on N. Water Street and the concept of urban living for older adults. I thought it was commendable for Landis Communities to venture into the rental market, so I joined the group.
What happened then? We had some interesting conversations about possible challenges for a property in the city – parking, unit size, price points, safety, and the overall impression older adults had of city life. Lancaster was not viewed as favorably then as it is today. But everyone was enthusiastic and excited about the project and I wanted to be a part of it.
How has your role with Landis Communities affected your life? It has helped me with my own family. I have a better appreciation of the benefits of older adults being able to have a community and

connect with people going through similar life experiences. Professionally, as a property owner, I’ve tried to be more aware and responsive to the needs of my older tenants.
What do you want others to know about Landis Communities and Landis Quality Living (LQL)? I got involved with Steeple View Lofts to help explore a creative way for middle- income older adults to thrive in an urban setting. Ten years after opening, it is exciting to see the community that has been created there! I am now on the Board of Directors for Landis Quality Living (the division of Landis Communities involved with a variety of middle and lower income housing opportunities.) Te LQL Board and staff are continually looking for innovative ways to address the current and future housing needs of older adults.
Why do you serve on the Board of LQL?
Te goals and guiding values of Landis Quality Living align with my own. I want to be part of an organization whose staff and volunteer leaders model their values.
