Looking Forward to EACH DAY “I love to be busy. I’m 94, but still haven’t slowed down!” D

oris Horst is a client at Landis Adult Day Services and a resident at Landis Homes. In 2000, she and her husband, Roy moved to a cottage at Landis Homes after living in Tampa, Florida for 40 years. Two of her sisters, Roy’s parents and siblings, and

many cousins lived at Landis Homes, so it made sense to be near family. After Roy’s health began to decline, they transitioned to an apartment in Harvest View where he sadly passed away. After living independently for ten years, Doris moved to Personal Care. “It’s been a great move for me, but an adjustment!”

When Doris and Roy first moved to Landis Homes, they were always seen walking or biking around campus, and up until a few years ago, she was consistently walking 3 miles a day. Before COVID-19, Doris took up volunteering in the Garden Room to keep active. “Roy was the first of us to begin attending Landis Adult Day Services, and his attending freed me up to have more time to myself,” says Doris. “I love helping people, so it made sense to work with people who needed assistance with carrying trays in the Garden Room.”

When new policies were implemented during the pandemic, Doris was unable to volunteer. She remembered how much her husband enjoyed attending Landis Adult Day Services and how much he benefited from the activities offered, so Doris and her family decided it made sense for her to attend as well.

Doris attends Adult Day Services every day, and cheekily references her attending as ‘going to work’, since she’s kept so busy throughout the day. “But I don’t get paid!” she adds with a chuckle. “I love working with my hands and the team members here know that. When I come in, they know exactly what I like to do and make sure it’s available for me.” Doris appreciates all that she’s able to do at Adult Day Services. She is well-known at the center and is often referred to as a social butterfly.

If she didn’t have the center to look forward to, Doris exclaimed she would just sit in her room. “And you can only watch so much television!”
